Sermorelin is a synthetic analogue of growth hormone-releasing hormone (GHRH), consisting of the first 29 amino acids of endogenous GHRH (1–29 NH2). It acts on the pituitary gland to stimulate the natural, pulsatile release of growth hormone (GH), making it fundamentally different from exogenous GH administration. Because sermorelin works via the body's own regulatory axis — triggering GH release only within physiological feedback constraints — it is considered safer than direct GH injection and less likely to produce supraphysiological GH levels. Sermorelin was FDA-approved in 1997 for treatment of growth hormone deficiency in children but was later voluntarily withdrawn from the market by the manufacturer. It remains widely used in anti-aging and wellness medicine as a research compound and through compounding pharmacies.
